In the 20th century clothing and fashion accessories came into the spotlight of art and cultural history. Yet no other item exerts such a lasting fascination as the shoe. Throughout countless eras, the shoe has become a symbol of status, individuality and aesthetics.
Cihangir Gümüştürkmen has been exploring shoes in all their forms since 1997. They are more than just functional objects for him – hey tell stories and reveal unspoken secrets about the status of their wearers. Shoes embody the human urge for self-expression and transformability. Gümüştürkmen's artistic focus is primarily on women's shoes. Beginning with bizarre ceramic high heels, he soon expanded his repertoire to include a wide variety of materials: from shiny sheet metal to delicate lace, sparkling pearls, colorful Lego bricks and even unusual materials such as pasta or glass. Each work holds its own story. He also transforms real women's shoes into art objects. His first exhibition on this theme took place at the Berlin gallery Art Work in 1999 and was accompanied by a catalogue (PUMPS2000). This exhibition marked the beginning of an impressive series of works which was expanded in 2001 to include artistic handbags with the PUMPS2000CANTA series.
Major museums have recognized his works. In 2021, for example, his artwork "Perlenschka" (1999) was acquired by the Belgian museum Shoes Or No Shoes, while "MÜRENKA" (2022), a tribute to the Turkish artist Zeki Müren, is shown at Manifesta 16 Ruhr in 2026.
