Born in the Turkish city of Izmir, Cihangir Gümüstürkmen has lived in Berlin (Germany) since 1977. He creates works in various fields, such as painting, sculpture, ceramics, collage and video. Cihangir is also a performance artist.

Artist statement

I have been driven by an urge to question rules since early childhood. My understanding of the artist's task is to ask questions. By exploring the boundaries of artistic expression, I refuse to be confined to one style or preconceived statements. It is the creative process that gives me the freedom to think unconventionally and break new ground. Through installations, paintings, video works and performance I reveal the facets of my identity and thereby create opportunities for dialogue. I focus on aspects such as origin, sexuality and religion. My work is characterised by ironic self-reflection. It is this wink that creates a lightness that invites the viewer to question their own perspectives.
